The journey of Birla Institute of
Applied Sciences (BIAS) began in 1969 with the establishment of a Centre of the Birla Institute of Scientific
Research (BISR) by Shri B. M. Birla, a renowned industrialist, in the newly developing Bhimtal industrial area.
The aim was to provide basic workshop facilities and testing grounds for entrepreneurs to set up industrial units in the
region. With the backing of leading educational institutions such as Birla Institute of Technology, Mesra, Ranchi
and B. M. Birla Science & Technology Centre, Jaipur, an academic institution was established in the same
campus. In 1990, the Institute humbly commenced its academic programme in computer education leading to MCA degree.
It was affiliated to Kumaun University. Expanding the horizons for professional education, the Institute also started
a 3-year B.Tech. course in Electronics & Communication Engineering in the year 2000 that was converted into a 4-years
undergraduate degree programme (post 10+2) in 2003. In 2006, the department of Computer Science & Engineering was established.
Believing in the principle of quality over quantity, the institute currently admits 60 students in each of the two
engineering branches, resulting in a high faculty-student ratio.
